wooden jigsaw puzzles for toddlers

A castle meant for a king! Kids, build this royal house from a Back To Blocks set of wooden building blocks. This is our 2nd in a series of how to build a castle from blocks. This blog features our popular 120 piece "Crazy Constructor" block set. Each week we build a new castle design from one of our all natural wooden block sets and share the step-by-step instructions with you. So by way of royal command, we invite you (and mom and dad too) to join us. You'll have more fun than the court jester and all with a bucket of simple wooden building blocks!

blocks needed to build castle

STEP 1

Place a 2" large block on the table. Then place a 4" small block on each side of it so the 4" block is lying

on it's long edge. There is a small space between the 4" blocks and the 2" block.

Stand a 4" column on each end of the 4" blocks.

STEP 3

Now in front of the center block you will lay a 2" small block so it is flat on the table. Then add another

4" small block laying flat in front of that. This  is the entrance and steps to your castle. Then to each side

of these blocks stand a 4" square post.

STEP 4

Add an arch to the top of each set of columns.

STEP 5

Make a throne for your king.  A few inches behind the structure you have built make a throne for your

king. You will make it from a 4" small block laying flat with an upside down arch on top. You will then

build your castle around this throne.

STEP 6-MAKE THE BACK AND SIDES OF THE CASTLE

Use the 6" large blocks to form the corners. On the sides between the corner blocks use 2 stacks of a 4" large and a

2" large block. Then the back wall is made from (6)6" small blocks standing on their ends. These can be a little tippy so use your best balancing skills.

STEP 7-MAKE TOWER ON THE LEFT SIDE OF CASTLE

Make the first level of  the tower using (5)4" small blocks and (1)4" single hole window. With the window block facing the front of the castle, form a circle out of these 6 blocks. They are standing on their ends. See the first photo below. Then make a second level with (6)4" small blocks and the third level the same as the bottom level. Note that the levels on top span the space between the blocks of the level below.

STEP 8-MAKE THE TOWER ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF CASTLE

You will now make a tower on the other side of the castle. This tower is made from levels of (6) of the 2" small blocks. They are laid on their longest edge. You will make 5 levels of these blocks, again having layer above overlap the space between the lower blocks.

STEP 9

Next to the tower you just built place the following blocks as pictured below. (2)4" large blocks on end, a 4" square post on end, a 4" large wedge and then a large triangle on top.

STEP 10

Next to the first tower you will make a similar structure except right next to the tower put (3)6" small blocks on end with a 2" small block on top of them. Then copy the structure you built by the other tower.

STEP 11

On top of the sides and back walls of the castle place (7)2" large blocks. There are (2) on each side and (3) on the back wall. Place them so they are over the space between the blocks of the wall below them. This will make it more sturdy. On the front wall place an arch spanning the 2 arches already in place. Then put a 2" single hole window on the opposite end of the 2 bottom arches.

STEP 13

Now take the (4)6" columns. Place one on each back corner and the other 2 go between the 2" single hole window blocks and the top arch. Balance carefully!

STEP 14-THE SPIRES

This part takes a steady hand! Place a 4" small wedge on top of each of the back tall columns. Then a small triangle on top of the front 2 columns. Last put the last 4" small wedges on top of the tallest tower and the (2)6" small wedges on top of the shorter tower.
